Hong Kong 2009 23rd Asian International Stamp Exhibition with Tangram Design

To mark the opening of "HONG KONG 2009 - 23rd Asian International Stamp Exhibition" (HONG KONG 2009), A stamp sheetlet was issued on 14 May 2009 which uses the tangram to demonstrate different actions, such as diving, playing football and practising martial arts.


At the same time, visitors can also see the entries from the 10th Inter-School Stamp Exhibits Competition. Hongkong Post has been organising this Competition since 2000. Co-organised by the Education Bureau, this inspirational and educational local competition aims to nurture an interest in philately among students, which closely complements the "Youth Philately" theme of HONG KONG 2009.

The design is developed from the logo of HONG KONG 2009 which takes the tangram, a puzzle game comprising seven pieces, as its subject. The logo depicts a boy and a girl walking briskly across a stylised postage stamp background. 

Due to a special printing effect, the $50 stamp can be turned into an interactive game. Place the enclosed screener on the stamp and move it slightly. A hidden pattern and words will come out.

Djibouti 1987 Lions Club Fight Against Leprosy Wooden Miniature Sheet

Issue date 23 March 1987

The Postal Authorities of the Republic of Djibouti honored Follereau and Hansen for their work in the fight against leprosy with the issue of a Wooden Miniature sheet with their pictures on the stamp.

French philanthropist and writer, Raoul Follereau, was the journalist who promoted World Leprosy day in 1954, as a way to raise global awareness of this deadly ancient disease and call attention to the fact that it can be prevented, treated and cured.  Raoul Follereau (1903-1977) was known as an “Apostle to the lepers and an educator of the blind”.

Leprosy is one of the oldest diseases known to humankind. It is also known as Hansen’s disease, named after Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who debunked the prevailing notion of the time that leprosy was a hereditary disease. He showed that the disease had a bacterial cause instead. The bacterium that causes leprosy was isolated by the Norwegian scientist Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen in 1873.

Australia 2015 Australian Trees Stamp Sheetlets Limited Edition Reissue - one printed on wood and other on paper with lemon scent

Australia Post has reissued the Special Pack with a sheetlet of wooden stamps and another sheetlet on paper with Lemon scented gum. The stamp feature Lemon-scented Gum (Corymbia citriodora) tree. Only 1000 packs were produced.

The earlier issue did not have the sheetlet with the lemon scented gum.

Australia 2015 Era of Sail Ships Booklet with Set of 4 Silk Stamps

Australia Post has issued a special prestige booklet on the Era of Sail Ships with a limited edition of only 500 pieces featuring a special self adhesive silk minisheet with a block of 4 silk stamps featuring 4 different sail ships. 

From the earliest days of European exploration, sailing ships were crucial in the development of Australia. Sailing ships carried everything that settlers needed for survival. The journey was often long and dangerous, ranging between six and 13 weeks, depending on weather conditions. Other hazards were fire and the difficulties
of maintaining hygiene. 

Clipper ships were known as the greyhounds of the sea from their beginnings in the 1840s and represented the pinnacle of sailing ship
technology. By the 1850s, the use of clipper ships on the England to Australia route was prominent, with most setting sail for Melbourne. These sleek sailing ships represented major advancements in design, enabling them to reach destinations more quickly. 

All the sailing ships featured in this issue have played a role in Australia’s maritime history. 

The Frances Henty was constructed in 1852 and named after the wife of Portland Bay patriarch Thomas Henty. The vessel carried passengers, gold and wool between London and Victoria. 

The clipper barque Phoenician of the White Star line was the first clipper ship to come to Australia, arriving in Port Jackson on 21 July 1849, taking 91 days from England. 

The painting of the Australian clipper ship Arabian, by CP Williams, was lithographed by John Raphael Isaac, medallist to HRH Prince Albert. 

The clipper barque Monkchester, was painted in 1865 by John Scott, a noted English oil painter from Newcastle.

The Red Jacket (cover) set a speed record on her maiden voyage
across the Atlantic in January 1854. The ship’s subsequent
voyage was to Melbourne in the then unprecedented time
of 67 days non-stop.

Tonga 2016 Chinese New Year - Lunar Year of the Monkey

Tonga Postal Authorities has issued a special Stamp Miniature sheet  which can folded into the shape of a Chinese wedding sedan chair. The sedan chair was used in ancient China to bring the bride to the groom’s home on the wedding day.

The special pane of stamps from Tonga was one of the 6 special stamps issued by the 6 South Pacific Islands  of Aitutaki, Cook islands, Niuafo’ou, Penrhyn and Samoa including Tonga. Aitutaki and Penrhyn are part of the Cook Islands, and Niuafo’ou is part of Tonga. The Year of the Monkey will begin on Feb. 8, 2016.

Tonga’s Year of the Monkey pane contains two $11.30 and $16.90 diamond-shaped stamps. The $11.30 stamp, designed by Sophia Zhang, shows a symbolic monkey in shades of green and decorated with a floral motif. The $16.90 stamp features a Chinese calligraphy painting by Zeng Fan. Instructions on how to fold is printed on the reverse of the pane.

Chinese calligraphy that translates to “Monkey’s congratulations” are shown on the four corners of these two stamps.

The Tonga Year of the Monkey pane also can be personalized by inserting a photograph or other label next to the printed postage stamp in the pane (as shown below),making it a good commemorative gift for a wedding couple or couples celebrating anniversaries.

The other participating postal authorities each issued a souvenir sheet with two diamond-shaped stamps. One stamp shows a symbolic monkey designed by Sophia Zhang.

The other features a calligraphy painting by one of the following famous Chinese artists: Huili Yin, Zhenshan Guo, Bingwu Yan, Xianlu Guo or Ermiao Zhang. Shiqi Zhang provided the calligraphy work.

While each souvenir sheet is shaped like a monkey, they all have different shapes.

For example, the souvenir sheet from Cook Islands is in the shape of mother and child monkeys. The $3.80 stamp in the sheet depicts a calligraphy painting of a baby monkey nestled in her mother's arms. The symbolic image on the $4.10 stamp shows a mother monkey looking at the infant on her back. The infant is holding a peach.

All of the sheets in this multinational issue also are designed so that they can stand up and be lined up to create a procession of monkeys working together to move the sedan chair with their arms and tails.

USA 1998 Wisconsin Stamp with Hidden Image

America’s 30th state, Wisconsin, has been known for many things. Its name is derived from an Indian word that has several possible meanings, including gathering of waters, wild rice country, and home land. Wisconsin is known as the Badger State – the nickname “badger” was first used for the lead miners who flocked there in the 1820s. The state’s huge output of dairy products has also earned it the nickname “America’s Dairyland.”

Despite its agricultural strength, since World War II, manufacturing has become Wisconsin’s primary source of revenue. It is a leading manufacturer of machinery, electrical components, paper goods, and food products. Wisconsin produces a third of the nation’s cheese and a fourth of its butter. One of our most progressive states, the state motto “Forward” describes its economic, political, social, and educational philosophies.


Wisconsin was first claimed by France, with England taking control after the French and Indian Wars. It became a U.S. territory after the Revolutionary War, and   was part of the Northwest Territory until 1800. Ownership was later transferred to Indiana, Illinois, and then Michigan. Independent territory status came in 1836. The present boundaries and capital, Madison, were established at the time of statehood on May 29, 1848.

Taiwan 2015 Jellyfish Stamps with Glow in Dark under UV

Jellyfish are cnidarians, a group of gelatinous invertebrates and have neither hearts nor skeletons. They are transparent and contain 95% water. To the lovers who are fond of marine life, the lightsome jellyfish are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful creatures in the water. With their umbrellalike shapes, transparent body colors and elegant tentacles, jellyfish slowly move in the sea through their bells expanding and contracting. By rhythmic movements, jellyfish sway like beautiful dancers. While emitting bioluminescent light, they are even more graceful and much more eye-catching comparing with other marine life. To show the beauty of marine life, Chunghwa Post has specially planned a set of four stamps featuring jellyfish. 

The designs follow : 

1. Pelagia noctiluca (NT$5): With bell diameter up to 10 cm, it feeds primarily on zooplankton and larval fish. Its reproductive gland contain bioluminescent enzyme that can produce beautiful glow. This jellyfish is widely distributed in warm temperate surface waters, and occurs in the waters off northern Taiwan, including Jinshan, Yeliu and Keelung Harbor.  

2. Physophora hydrostatica (NT$7): It can grow up to 8-12 cm in length and feeds on zooplankton. A colony contains a number of specialized individuals with different functions. It behaves and moves like a single organism. They are widely found in temperate and tropical surface waters of the world ocean. They often occur in spring and summer, and are common in the Taiwan Strait and in the waters south and east to Taiwan. 

3. Mastigias papua (NT$10): It is about 10 cm in diameter of the bell and feeds on zooplankton. Its umbrella has numerous white spots and can vary in color depending on the environmental conditions and the types of symbiotic algae. It is mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical coastal waters, as well as bays and lagoons. It can be found in the coastal waters of southern and northern Taiwan, including Yeliu. 

4. Cyanea capillata (NT$12): This is a large jellyfish with a bell that can reach up to 2 meters in diameter. It feeds on zooplankton, small fish and other jellyfishes. From its bell dangle as many as 150 tentacles, which may attain a length of 35 meters when fully stretched. It is mainly distributed in temperate and polar surface waters, but occasionally found in tropical waters with a smaller size. It can be seen in the northern and central Taiwan Strait and in the waters off northern Taiwan. 

In order to increase collecting interest and highlight jellyfish’s bioluminescence, the jellyfish illustrations of these stamps are printed with fluorescent inks, which will glow with beautiful colors when viewed under purple light making it more lifelike. The stamps are printed in four colors with three-color fluorescent inks, accumulated to seven colors in total.
