Latvia 1918 Latvia Coat of Arms Stamps

Front

Back

Issue date 18 December 1918

Latvia became part of the Russian Empire in the 1700s. On August 1, 1914, Germany declared war on Russia, bringing Russia and Latvia into World War I. Latvian leaders began making calls for independence during this war. German forces invaded most of Latvia during the war.

The war officially ended on November 11, 1918, and a week later, on November 18, Latvia declared its independence. During the war, Latvia used overprinted German stamps.

As a new nation, Latvia needed to create its own postage stamps, but the war had caused a severe paper shortage. However, there was one source of top-quality paper – Latvia’s industrious government printed its first stamps on military maps left behind by Germany’s Imperial Army! According to their records, they used 79 different German maps of Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland as well as 62 different maps of southern Latvia and northern Lithuania.

To save precious paper, stamps were printed in 12 rows of 19 stamps each for a total of 228 stamps per sheet. The back of these stamps have detailed German military maps showing sections of Latvia, complete with name, scale and map grid position.

A total of only 11,956 sheets were printed. And of those, only about 4,900 were perforated. Of those sheets printed, only 4,750 were delivered to Latvia’s government in the period between 1918 and 1919. The shipment included imperforate gummed sheets (Latvia #1), and perforated gummed sheets (Latvia #2).

Latvian painter and graphic artist Ansis Cirulis designed the first stamps. The stamps’ designs were based on the Latvian coat of arms. This design used a sun symbolizing statehood, with 17 rays representing the 17 Latvian districts. The design also includes three ears of grain and three stars, representing the three historic districts of the new nation.

Spain 2018 World heritage site of Cuenca

Issue date 28 September 2018

To commemorate the World Heritage site of Cuenca, Correos Spain has issued a special fold-out miniature sheet featuring the houses of Cuenca characterized by their narrow shape, and their colorful design with the white door and window frames, known as blincada.
The mini sheet has a pullout feature with folds.

In the early period, the streets were not well lit, and so the people painted a white circle around their doors and windows to be able to see in the dark whether someone was entering or leaving during the night, “standing out” against the colours. Hence the term Blincada from the verb “blincar” (to stand out).

Spain 2018 The Generation of the 90s

Reverse view

Issue date 10 September 2018

To commemorate the Nineties period, Correos Spain has issued a special odd shaped miniature sheets with odd shaped stamps featuring the memento of the events that shaped the history of humanity.

One stamp commemorates the fall of the Berlin Wall in the previous decade with the economic, monetary and social reunification of Germany beginning in 1990.

Another stamp commemorates the collapse of the USSR, the dissolution of the largest socialist state in the world, which also marked the end of the Cold War.

Spain, along with other European countries, reached an agreement for creating a single European currency. A stamp with the image of a 100 Euro note commemorates this event.

Two large events put Spain in the global spotlight, both in terms of culture and sport. The Olympic Games in Barcelona and the Universal Exposition of Seville changed the international image of our country forever. A stamp with the logos of both events makes up one of this issue’s stamps.

The miniature sheet also features the Pixar movie Toy Story phrase “To infinity and beyond”.

Reverse of stamp

Issue date 10 September 2018

To commemorate the Eighties period, Correos Spain has issued a special odd shaped miniature sheets with odd shaped stamps featuring the following events/people

The 1980s marked the start of a new era in Spain, with democracy, Adolfo Suárez became Prime Minister, the first elected leader since 1936.

In 1981 the course of Spanish politics was marked by a violent event. On 23 February there was an attempted coup, which although quickly neutralised, had a huge impact on the memory of the Spanish people, and even on the Congress building itself, where the bullet marks can still be seen.

The technology of everyday life has been represented in one of the stamp with the innovations in modern household appliances and colour TVs to the first personal computers becoming part of our homes.

The great defender of animals and nature, Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente, who died in 1980 is featured, with a lynx face, on another stamps in the mini sheet.

Liechtenstein 2017 Amber Room Miniature Sheet with Amber Tile affixed - Personalised Stamp

Issue Date 06 December 2018

The Amber Room was a chamber decorated in amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors, located in the Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo near Saint Petersburg. Constructed in the 18th century in Prussia, the original Amber Room was dismantled and eventually disappeared during World War II. Before its loss, it was considered an "Eighth Wonder of the World".

Originally commissioned by the Prussian King Frederick I for Charlottenburg Palace, it went in 1716 as a gift to the Russian Tsar Peter I to Saint Petersburg. It was given its final appearance under Catherine the Great when it was moved to its summer palace, the Catherine Palace, just outside St. Petersburg.

The Amber Room was looted during World War II by the Army Group North of Nazi Germany, and brought to Königsberg for reconstruction and display. Its current whereabouts remain a mystery.

This is a special issue Personal stamp created by the a Philatelic company Hermann E Sieger GmbH in collaboration with Liechtenstein Post. 499 pieces were issued. The minisheet features the picture of the Amber room with a piece of real amber tile attached to the middle stamp.

Spain 2018 200th Anniversary of the birth of Cosme García Sáez

Issue date 28 September 2018

In a worlds first production of rubber stamp, Correos Spain has issued a rubber stamp commemorating 200th Anniversary of the birth of Cosme García Sáez.

Cosme García Sáez was born in Logroño on 27 September 1818, to a humble family. Self-taught and with an inquiring mind, from an early age he showed great talent for mechanics and technical subjects, which years later would lead to the creation of inventions relating to weapons, printing, mail, and sailing.

Rubber is used instead of paper for the stamp, and the design is in relief: with the silhouette of Cosme García, a sketch of the submersible under the sea, the text and the imprint of the 1857 dater, which stands out at the right side of the effect.

Canada 2000 Picture Postage Stamps
Issue Date 28 April 2000

Personalized postage stamps were introduced to Canadian consumers on April 28th, 2000. The new product, called Picture Postage, was made available through Canada Post retail outlets.

The stamp design was a two-part product consisting of an outer stamp frame and a personalized sticker. What made the product unique was that consumers could design the picture that appeared on the sticker that was to be placed inside the frame.  This way they could create their own stamp using pictures of loved ones, pets, wedding photographs or even corporate logos. Canada Post was the first postal administration to offer this type of product.

In order to obtain a sheet of stamps, the customer had to supply a photograph or artwork, pay a premium above face value, and mail the order with the printer, Ashton Potter (Canada) Inc.
