Spain 2020 Mineral - Jet

Issue date 29 May 2020

The famous Asturian jet is an organic gemstone, highly valued for its excellent cutting qualities, and attaining a typical shine and intense black colour after polishing. Specialist studies determine that the woody material , which becomes a humic carbon, peri hydrogenated during the Kimmeridgian age (Late Jurassic) around 155 million years ago, underwent particular circumstances while it formed, such as impregnation with hydrocarbons, which gives it some of its unique features and exceptional stability for use in jewellery making.

The image shows one of the old abandoned mine entrances in the Oles area. This is the only one that can be visited and is the end of what is known as the “Jet Route” (PR-AS.199).

A small sample of the prestigious Oles jet is impregnated exclusively in this Premium Sheet.

Spanish air mail centenary

Issue date 30 June 2020

Good Friday 1920, 1 April. Four post office planes departed from and arrived at an aerodrome in Alicante simultaneously. They were part of the opening ceremony for the first air mail route in Spain. It was a route that covered Barcelona - Alicante - Málaga, although its departure point was Toulouse, which was where the airline Latécoère, which operated the flight, was based.

The commemorative issue for this centenary has been done in the form of a die cut, simulating a biplane dropping the correspondence while it flies.

Spain 2020 Elms of Cabeza del Buey

Issue date 17 September 2020

The seven ancient Elms in the town of Cabeza del Buey, loom large over the chapel of the Our Lady of Belén sanctuary, are believed to be the last examples of the urban elm trees in Extremadura despite the Graphiosis, a serious disease that affects elm trees and that has reduced the population of this tree species in Spain and the rest of the world.

The Elms represented Spain in the 2018 European "Tree Of The Year" competition, finishing in second place with 22,323 votes, the best placing by a Spanish candidate in a competition of this type.

The stamp issued by Correos dedicated to this type of tree and, specifically, to this vintage and historical elm, is printed on wood paper in the form of a cut trunk where its rings can be seen, which not only give information as to the age of the tree, but also details about the kind of life it has led.

Spain 2020 Discoverers of Oceania - Miguel López de Legazpi

Issue date 22 June 2020

The stamp dedicated to the great explorer Miguel López de Legazpi is printed on wood-based paper and contains an illustration of Miguel López de Legazpi along with another of the islands he conquered.

The expedition that left his name carved into the history books set sail from Puerto de Navidad on 21 November 1564, with Legazpi as captain-general and with secret instructions to change course for the San Lázaro islands. In January they made out the Ladronas islands (Marianas) and took possession of the largest one, Guam. They renamed Leyte as the Philippines in honour of the future king, Philip II, and Mindao island as Césarea Karoli.

They were received by chief Camatuhan and his son, regulator of Samar island, and carried out diplomatic work which gave rise to the foundation by Legazpi, on 8 April 1565, of San Miguel island.

In Cebú, they found the famous image of the Boy Jesus which must have come from a previous expedition.

Subsequently, in 1570, Legazpi entered the town of Manila, which the natives called Maynilad, a prosperous, commercial, Muslim enclave in the south of Luzón island.

After numerous clashes and conflicts, Rajah Matanda handed Maynilad over to López de Legazpi.
