Australia Christmas Island 2016 Chinese Lunar New Year of the Monkey Silk Souvenir Sheet

Gummed and perforated and printed on real silk

Self adhesive with mesh perforations and printed on a silk like rayon paper

Issue date 03 February 2016

The Monkey is the ninth sign in the Chinese Zodiac 12-year cycle. Each Zodiac Sign is also associated with one of the five elements of Chinese astrology, namely: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.

The year 2016 belongs to the element Fire and thus 2016 is the Year of the Red Fire Monkey.

Those born under the sign are considered witty, mischievous and inquisitive. The Monkey’s love of learning and ability to solve problems make it well suited to careers in finance, science and engineering.

The Stamps features the mischievous Monkey king character from the Chinese novel, “Journey to the West”, published in the 16th century during the Ming dynasty and attributed to Wu Cheng’en.

The novel is an extended account of the legendary pilgrimage of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang who along with Monkey king traveled to India, to obtain Buddhist sacred sutras and returned after many trials and much suffering.

The stamp pack above includes 3 minisheets - 1 is a regular minisheet, 2nd is gummed and perforated and printed on real silk, 3nd is self adhesive with mesh perforations and printed on a silk like rayon paper. All 3 minisheets have been embellished with Milford Astor gold foil.
