New Caledonia 2016 Astronomy in New Caledonia

Issue date 05 August 2016

The 26th “Nuits des Etoiles” event was held on 5, 6 and 7 August 2016. Sky-watching fans in New Caledonia, all over France and in various countries in Europe and Africa are invited to join fellow stargazers in contemplation of the seasonal constellations and visible planets (this year, these include Jupiter, Mars and Saturn), or to watch out for eagerly awaited shooting stars.

The stamp illustrates the most powerful telescope in New Caledonia, the Dobson 600, recently built by the members of the New Caledonian Association for Astronomy (ACA); it also shows the stars of the famous Southern Cross, the best known constellation in the southern hemisphere.

The luminous beauty of the stars has been highlighted by using glow-in-the-dark printing technology: the stars on both the single stamps and stamp sheets light up in the dark!

Spain 2017 The Generation of the 60s

Issue date 16 July 2017

The 1960s laid the foundations for a new Europe, but above all, for a new Spain that was beginning to open up to the world, to show its values and resources, its culture and, above all, its identity.

The topics chosen among the subscribers by voting for the stamps of this new block sheet have been:

May 68: student revolts and massive strikes that rocked France in May 1968 changed the lives of generations. Young university students disenchanted with educational reforms, disgruntled workers or the rejection of the Vietnam War, converged leading to closures and demonstrations that left many wounded and the sensation of a revolution that could not be.

Kennedy assassination: John F. Kennedy, president of the United States, was killed on Friday, November 22, 1963 in Dallas. He received several deadly shots as he paraded with his wife in the presidential car. Lee Harvey Oswald was accused of the murder although today it is still speculating on the conspiratorial character of that act.

First heart transplant: in 1967 the South African surgeon Christian Barnard, 44, and head of the department of thoracic surgery, performed for the first time a human heart transplant, a fact that caused a sensation all over the world.

Man's Arrival to the Moon: Neil Armstrong was the first man to step on the Moon, on July 20, 1969, before the eyes of millions of people around the world, who lived this historic moment through television. It remained his famous phrase: "this is a small step for man, but a great leap for humanity".

The block sheet that brings together the four seals, presents a punch with the numbers 6 and 0.

Spain 2017 The Generation of the 70's odd shaped MS with odd shaped stamps

Issue date 16 July 2017

There are many great events that took place in that decade, but these are topics chosen from subscribers by voting for the stamps of this new block sheet:

Fiber Optic Discovery: In 1970, four researchers working at the company Corning Glass, manufactured the first optical fiber. They did this by applying titanium residues to silica. Little by little the technique was improved and on April 22, 1977, General Telephone and Electronics sent the first telephone transmission through fiber optics in California.

Spanish monarchy: Francisco Franco died in 1975 and began an intense political transition in Spain. That same year Juan Carlos de Borbón is proclaimed king and two years later, the 15 of June of 1977 the first elections were celebrated from the Civil War. The coalition Union of Democratic Center (UCD), led by Adolfo Suárez was the most voted.

John Paul II: in August 1978 Pope John Paul I was appointed Pope, who died only suddenly after 33 days. After his death came John Paul II, the first Polish pope, and the first non-Italian after almost 5 centuries.

Invention of disposable syringe: some great inventions came to stay and make life much easier such as disposable syringe, which arrived in 1973 from the hand of the Spanish Manuel Jalon Corominas, also inventor of the mop.

The block sheet that brings together the four seals, presents a die with the numbers 7 and 0 with a flowery pattern that reminds us of that time.

Spain 2017 Origami Stamp

Issue date 17 July 2017

Origami is defined as the art of creating paper figures without cutting or using glue, only folding a square of paper.

The paper figures can take many forms, including flowers, animals, objects, faces or architectural elements.

Paper folding originated in China in the 1st or 2nd century CE, arriving in Japan in the 6th century, where it became part of Japanese culture, and has continued to grow in popularity and complexity since then. At first, only Japan’s upper classes could enjoy it, due to the high price of paper.

It was introduced to the West via the caravans of the Silk Road and spread rapidly as a cheap and easy pastime.

Eventually, the two main centres of paper folding were Spain in the west, where it is called papiroflexia, and Japan in the east, with the name origami. Both countries developed a classic bird figure, which became a long-standing tradition: the crane in Japan and the pajarita in Spain.

Correos Spain has issued a special stamp which can be folded into a Bow Tie following the instructions on the Souvenir sheet. The stamp also incorporates Augmented Reality where one can download a tutorial on how to mount the bow tie.

Singapore 2017 Wedding Jewelry

Issue date 12 July 2017

Singapore Post has issued a special Wedding Jewellery souvenir Sheet featuring four exquisite and intricate necklaces used during weddings. The limited edition wedding jewelry (1,888) serialised Collectors’ Sheets comes with four $10 stamps with a total face value of $40. These sheets are specially printed using offset lithography with 22K gold and shiny film hot foiling with embossing to bring out the intricacy and details of the necklaces.

The first stamp in the series features a Heavenly Match necklace, part of the Si Dian Jin (四点金) set of dowry jewellery, with interlocking dragon and phoenix motifs – well-loved mythical creatures that, according to Chinese tradition, bring good fortune and protection. The necklace is an illustration of the famed Chinese phrase, Long Feng Pei (龙凤配), which represents the idea that both majestic creatures are a perfect couple - a match made in heaven.

The second stamp is of a Peranakan Intan necklace with flora and fauna motifs. This piece has been designed in an art nouveau style combined with Asian aesthetics.

The third stamp features a mangalsutra, an ornate necklace of yellow gold with a design based on a wedding bell. This is one of the many jewellery items worn by an Indian bride to symbolise different aspects of the union with her husband.

The fourth stamp is of a necklace with diamonds set in yellow gold. This piece, named My Fair Lady, is inspired by jewelry worn by members of the Eurasian community.
