Ukraine 2025 Cities of Heroes. Mariupol Stamp with thermographic printing

Ukrposhta Ukraine Post has issued a special souvenir sheet commemorating the horrific bombing of the Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theater in Mariupol, where more than a thousand civilians, including women and children, were hiding from the shelling. A warning sign “CHILDREN” was written in large letters on the square in front of the theater on 22 March 2022. 

The postage stamps of the issue are covered with particles of steel manufactured at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol and printed by Cartor Security Printers (France) with thermographic printing.

Brazil 2014 Prehistoric Animals of Brazil stamps with Thermographic printing

Correios Brazil has issued a set of 4 stamps depicting prehistoric animals who roamed the territory of Brazil. 

Two of the stamps depicting Dinosaurs have been printed with thermographic printing which provides a 3D depth feeling to the pictures and also a special raised feel of the dinosaurs. 

The other 2 stamps has a varnish type of printing on the stamps.

Luxembourg 2015 Christmas

Argentina 2014 YPF - Energy Self sufficiency

Correos Argentino has issued a commemorative stamp to declare the energy self-sufficiency attained by Government controlled YPF oil company in achieving self-sufficiency of their exploitation, processing, transportation and marketing of oil produced in the shale reserves of the country.

The sheet and stamps has special sand-effect feel when touched with the help of thermographic printing. A matt raised feel effect is felt in the part of stamp/sheet depicting the various layers of the soil.

Argentina 2017 50th Anniversary of the Galileo Planetarium

Correos Argentino has issued a special souvenir sheet featuring a hexagonal stamp and with thermographic printing of (raised) spots on the sheet depicting the stars which one can feel. The souvenir sheet commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Galileo Planetarium located in Bueno Aires in Argentina.

Belgium 2017 Europa Belgian Castles

The Europa Annual theme 2017 was dedicated to Castles and BPost has issued a special miniature sheet featuring a fictional sand castle with 5 stamps.

The sheet and stamps has special sand-effect feel when touched with the help of thermographic printing. Red shiny particles are noticeable on the printing giving it a depth feel.

Hongkong 2017 - Children Stamps - Five Senses

Hong Kong Post has issued a set of special stamps, entitled “Children Stamps – The Five Senses” with different printing effects to depict the five senses of hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch. 

HK$1.70 – The stamp for “Hearing” has sand powder applied to its surface by thermography. Rubbing the surface will make a sound.

HK$2.20 – The stamp for "Sight" has the round lens of the camera removed by die-cutting so you can peep in the hole and see the world through the lens of the camera.

HK$2.90 – The stamp for “Smell” is peach-scented.

HK$3.70 – The gum on the back of the stamp for “Taste” is vanilla-flavoured.

HK$5 – The basketball on the stamp for “Touch” is augmented by applying heat inflating ink (Thermography) to simulate the feel of a real basketball.

USA 2017 Have a Ball Forever Stamps Sheet

To celebrates the nation’s passion for athletics, United States Postal Service has issued 8 self-adhesive circular stamps showcasing illustrations of eight sports balls: baseball, basketball, football, golf, kickball, soccer, tennis, and volleyball.

A special coating applied to selected areas of the stamps during the printing process gives them a textured feel.

Argentina 2002  Men's World Volleyball Championship with thermographic printing (rubber effect) on the stamp

Issue date 28 September 2002

The FIVB World Championship is an international men's and women's indoor volleyball competition. It is the oldest and most important of all the international events organized by the FIVB.  Argentina was the host in 2002, where Brazil had won, beating Russia in the finals with 3-2. 

Argentina Post had issued a set of 4 stamps of 75 cents each where the net had a rubberised feel to it.

Estonia 2016 Centenary of shale oil mining in Estonia    

Issue date 15 June 2016

Industrial mining of oil shale began on 15 June 1916 on the Estonian territory. To commemorate this milestone of 100 years, Eesti Post has issued a special miniature sheet  with thermography printing 

Some websites / philatelic chatrooms describe the stamps have been printed with rock dust from the shale rock but the postal website has no mention of the same..till confirmation I have categorised this under stamps with thermography printing (even though the postal webpage mentions offset printing). It does not mention anything of the rough surface found on the miniature sheet.

EIRE Post issued a set of 5 innovative stamps featuring the human senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch.

The 70c stamp features Taste where strawberry flavored gum has been applied to the back of the stamp.

The €1.05 stamp features Touch – where thermochromic ink has been used, so that when the hand illustration is touched, it changes color.

The €1.25 stamp feature Sight – printed on transparent paper, when you pick up the stamp you can see through it.

The €1.70 stamp feature Hearing with thermography so that when the stamp is rubbed it creates a sound.

The €2.80 stamp feature Smell with a mint fragrance has been added to the surface of the stamp.

Argentina 2014 Recovery of Commercial Air Sovereignty with thermographic printing and glow in dark under UV

To celebrate the Recovery of Commercial Air Sovereignty by Argentina with re-entry of Argentina National Carrier Aerolineas Argentinas into IATA with inauguration of new Cephera Flight Instruction centre, Argentina Post has issued a miniature sheet depicting the progress of the National Carrier coming of age by rejoining the IATA world air community.

Some of the milestones achieved is depicted on the stamp

- Construction of the hangar 5 in Aeroparque
-  Increased frequency
-  Increased federal connectivity with 67 operational aircrafts and 51 aircrafts being built
- Joining the Sky Team alliance of airlines
- New Destinations

The runway of the stamp has been printed with thermographic process giving a rough feel to the airport runway. Also the stamp features glow in the dark printing where the number 6 outline and the runway lights glow in the dark under UV light.

Thermographic Printing is a specialist process which creates an enamel-like ‘relief’ effect on the stamp. Special heat reactive, or thermographic, powders is applied to wet printing ink creating a distinctive raised effect on the finished stamp.  

Finland 2007 Easter Rabbit Ceramic Like Stamp

Thermography was used in Finland for the first time when the Easter stamp for 2007 was printed. This technique gives the stamp a ceramic-like roughness. Stamp has been printed by Cartor Company.

Vanuatu 2011 Beautiful Beaches of Vanuatu Stamps Set with Thermographic printing 

Issue date 28 September 2011   

The Beach stamp issue from Vanuatu Post carries a special coating to simulate the feel of real sand. The stamps are printed in four process colours and then perforated. They then received a patterned overprint with a clear sealer followed by a coarse 30 micron non dissolving spray powder is applied.

The stamp issue has a textured feel and highlights four beaches - Champagne Beach, Havana Harbour, Eratap Island and Pele Island.

The stamp features white sand curving around enchanting bays and stretching into turquoise, clear blue water teeming with tropical fish and colourful coral,  Palm trees swaying on the beaches while waves lap the shore, volcanic islands in the distance, varieties of fish, the exotic bird life and the turtle.  Some of the beaches are only accessible by boat or float plane.
