Austria 2006 – Mail from a Different World – Stamp with Meteorite Dust particles

Issue date 24 March 2006

Austria Post issued a special stamp with an out of the world rock; this stamp contained 0.03 grams of meteorite dust. The dust came from a 19 kilogram stony meteorite found in Morocco in 2004. The meteorite is composed of Olivine, a mineral chemically defined as magnesium iron silicate. The gemstone known as Peridot is an example of gem-quality Olivine.

The meteorite was crushed into a very fine dust, which was then hand-affixed to the circular stamp using a special adhesive. The stamp issue, called Mail from a Different World, sold for 3.75 EU. 600,000 copies were printed.

Part of the meteor's tail extends onto the border area of this sheet. According to Austria Post, the unused portion of the meteorite is on display at the Vienna NaturalHistory Museum, which houses one of the world's largest collections of meteorites

France 2009 - 50th Anniversary of Asterix with Stone Dust affixed on Menhir

Issue date 03 December 2009

The Adventures of Asterix (French: Astérix or Astérix le Gaulois) is a series of French comic books written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo (Uderzo also took over the job of writing the series after the death of Goscinny in 1977). The series first appeared in French in the magazine Pilote on 29 October 1959. As of 2009, 34 comic books in the series have been released.

The series follows the exploits of a village of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the recipient superhuman strength. The protagonist, the titular character, Asterix, along with his friend Obelix have various adventures. In many cases, this leads them to travel to various countries around the world, though other books are set in and around their village. For much of the history of the series (Volumes 4 through 29), settings in Gaul and abroad alternated, with even-numbered volumes set abroad and odd-numbered volumes set in Gaul, mostly in the village.

The Asterix series is one of the most popular Franco-Belgian comics in the world, with the series being translated into over 100 languages, and it is popular in most European countries. Asterix is less well known in the United States and Japan.

The success of the series has led to the adaptation of several books into 11 films; eight animated, and three with live actors. There have also been a number of games based on the characters, and a theme park near Paris, Parc Astérix, is themed around the series. To date, 325 million copies of 34 Asterix books have been sold worldwide, making co-creators Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo France's bestselling authors.

La Poste France, much to the delight of fans around the world, decided to issue a series of stamps on 03 December 2009 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Asterix and the other lovable creations of Goscinny and Uderzo with stone dust on the Menhir held by Obelisk.

The set in an A5 film-wrapped pack consists of one copy of each of the two different special miniature sheets with information in Hungarian and English, and a gift pair of 3D glasses.

Its collection includes simple oil lamps, candle holders, industrial and domestic lamps, oil and paraffin lamps, lamps made from antique Chinese vases, and paraffin lamps with bases made of Zsolnay majolica and Meissen porcelain. The Museum was entered in the Guinness Book of Records in 1995, and became a member of the Rushlight Club (International Association of Collectors and Students of Historic Lighting) in 1980 and a member of the National Museum of Australia in 1983.

The Calcite Crystal Museum is in Fertőrákos, a village located near LakeFertő, which is on the World Heritage list. HISTORY OF THE TRANSFER OF POSTAL ITEMS

Austro-Hungarian postman, 1900s

Throughout the long history of news transmission, the postman is the constant on which the whole activity rests. From the first messengers on foot in ancient civilizations who, according to Herodotus, could be stopped by " neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night, to the fearless Dubrovnik messenger who had to walk for a month to reach Istanbul, and all the way to a reliable Austro-Hungarian postman with a full mail bag shown on this motif. Every news carrier was adorned with speed, accuracy, and reliability, the same features as postmen today.

Austrian postilion, around 1730

A written message delivered to a messenger on horseback travelled significantly faster than a message carried by a messenger on foot. In cases of great haste, correspondence was marked “Cito, Cito, Citissime” (Latin for Fast, Fast, Fastest). A few centuries ago, a horseman in the service of the post office throughout Europe was called a postilion (from French postillion). He was adorned with an official postal uniform prescribed by special provisions, a specially shaped cap and high sturdy riding boots. A postilion was recognizable to everyone by the postal horn he wore slung over his shoulder and by which he announced his arrival at the destination as needed.

Mail coach for passengers, luggage and mail in Dalmatia, 1890s

The invention of horse-drawn vehicles made it possible to naturally connect the transport of goods and passengers with the transmission of news. The most important means of postal transport before the advent of the railway was a mail coach, mostly its fast version - a stagecoach. The guard of the mail coach, a postilion, took care of the safety of the passengers, but also the horses. He used a post horn to warn other coaches on the road to let the mail coach pass as well to signal its arrival at the post offices, which were evenly distributed along the main state roads for the needs of postal traffic.

Telegraph delivery man on a bicycle in Zagreb, 1930s

After being delivered from the World's Fair in Paris in 1867, the bicycle became extremely popular in Croatia, so it is not surprising that it was mentioned at the end of the 19th century as a new postal delivery vehicle. The original function of the postal two-wheeler was the delivery of urgent telegrams. This is evidenced by the telegram carrying case hung over the shoulder of this delivery man on a bicycle from the 1930s. The scene of the postman on a bicycle has thus become an everyday occurrence that evokes sympathy even today.

Postman on a moped in Zagreb, 1960s

The motorization of postal transport in Croatia began in the 1910s, a decade after the first cars arrived in Croatia. Car transport has brought a new quality to postal traffic, especially when it comes to the speed and safety of transport of postal items, but also passengers. The modernization of the postal delivery service was later continued with the introduction of motorcycles alongside bicycles into delivery service. On a moped, like this one from the 1960s, the postman will deliver urgent mail for decades to come.
