Netherlands 2001 Guilders Silver Stamp

Issue date 25 September 2001

On 25th September 2001 The Netherlands issued a very interesting stamp, made of a thin piece of solid silver, and minted (not printed) by the Royal Dutch Mint in Utrecht.  The stamp is self-adhesive.  It has the face value of 12,75 Guilders and is intended for registered mail.  It is the first time ever this stamp minting technique has been applied.  As the Netherlands converted to the Euro by January 2002, it is also the last Dutch stamp issued in Guilders, and neither is it combined with the Euro.

Finland 2010 Heureka Science Center MS with Tangram Design

Triangle Stamp with Hologram image

Issue date 30 May 2010

DNA research and digital communication are the subjects of the new Science miniature sheet issued on 30 May 2010 by the . The sheet is also a tribute to the Heureka Science Center  dedicated to introducing different disciplines and the new technology to the general public and to young people in particular. The hologram sheet contains three FIM 3.50 stamps and is priced at FIM 10.50.

As a specialty feature, the sheet is in the form of an ancient Chinese puzzle, the tangram. By reorganizing the pieces of the puzzle, you will be able to form two identical smaller squares. The stamps - a triangle, a parallelogram and a square - are also pieces of the puzzle. The solution is printed on the back of the sheet. A "tangram" is a game with 7 geometric shapes, put together as a square. Each of the single shapes can be formed by putting the other shapes in a certain order. Also other forms can be made by putting each piece in another place. A nice game and major brain-breaker.

The miniature sheet contains two seals, one featuring the Sierpinski Triangle as a hologram, the other the emblem of the Science Center Heureka. The center with its cinema Verne also appears on
the miniature sheet. The sheet has 3 stamps and a hologram.

Canada 2014 Haunted Canada with 3D Hologram Image

Issue Date 13 June 2014

On Friday the 13th June 2014, Canada Post issued a set of 5 Stamps titled “Haunted Canada“,which highlighted some of Canada’s more infamous spooky stories,

Quebec’s Fairmont Le Château Frontenac: Legend has it that Count of Frontenac, for whom the hotel is named, has been spotted wandering the hotel halls, sitting on windowsills or floating through the ballroom, dressed in his 17th-century garb.

Alberta’s Ghost Bride of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel: Employees and guests have reported seeing a figure with a long, flowing dress descending the stairs. She is believed to be a bride who tripped and fell to her death on her wedding day.

Ontario’s Fort George: Due to battles of the War of 1812 and their aftermath, spirits are said to still be seen or heard wandering within its stone walls. Cold spots, crying, moaning and the sound of footsteps have all been reported. Tales are told of people having being poked or having their hair pulled, only to turn around and find no one there.

Saskatchewan’s St. Louis Ghost Train: There are tales of a ghostly glowing light, known as the “St. Louis Light,” in the Saskatchewan River Valley. Those who believe in the ghost train claim it’s the long-dead CNR (Canadian National Railway) conductor who literally lost his head back in the 1920s to a passing train while examining the track with his lantern.

PEI’s The Northumberland Strait: The tale has been told by residents for at least 200 years of a vision of a burning ship on the waters between New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. On several occasions, onlookers have tried to rescue the ship but as soon as rescuers come close, the ship disappears into the mist.

The stamps have been printed with a holographic image along with the words 'Haunted Canada" in English and French which can be seen when the stamp is tilted at a slight angle.

Each stamp sports a holographic foil highlighting key areas–like the fire devouring the Phantom Ship that perpetually burns along the Northumberland Strait, or the glint in the Ghost Bride’s eyes–adding to the spooky atmosphere. The images were illustrated by Sam Weber, a Canadian artist living in New York for Canada Post.

Philippines 2014 Watchtower Stamps set with Textured Rough Surface

Issue date 28 March 2014

The Philippine Postal Corp. issued a set of 4 Stamps along with a miniature sheet of 4 stamps featuring Philippine watchtowers textured with a rough Surface to feel like sand achieved through tactile printing.

The special stamp souvenir sheet which features four watchtowers found in Boljoon, Cebu; Bantay, Ilocos Sur; Samboan, Cebu; and Tabaco, Albay.

The watchtower in Boljoon, Cebu was built around the late 1700s and is separated from a church by a narrow corridor. The unadorned bell tower of Boljoon looks out to sea.

The watchtower in Bantay, Ilocos Sur was erected in the 1790s. Bantay town stands beside the Abra River that flows from the Cordillera to the Luzon Sea. Through this waterway, commerce between mountain and sea was facilitated. It serves both an ecclesiastical and military function. The bell tower has a panoramic view of Abra River, the town of San Vicente, and Vigan City.

The watchtower in Samboan, Cebu faces Tañon Strait and is located on a promontory accessed through a 157-step stone stairway popularly called Jacob’s ladder. This watchtower is believed to be the handiwork of Fr. Toribio Gerzon in 1878. Samboan was under the secular clergy.

The church bell tower in Tabaco, Albay, meanwhile, was considered an efficient warning device against attacks from pirates.

The other set of 4 stamps also released on the same date featuring the watch towers of Narvacan (Ilocos Sur) , Luna (La Union), Oslob (Cebu) and Panglao (Bohol).

Narvacan, Ilocos Sur - The most photographed watchtower in the Ilocos, the tower at Sulvec, near Narvacan, has the silouhette of a rook. This brick and limestone tower is approximately 6.5 meters in diameter and 7.0 meters in height, smaller than most Ilocos towers.

Luna, La Union - A deep groove around the inner rim and quadrilateral notches suggest that the tower was roofed. Circular brick watchtower, in fair condition.

Oslob, Cebu - Moving south from Caceres on encounters another of Fray Julian’s handiwork, the octagonal watchtower of Oslob. Its rubble walls on which are propped susod, a sieve net for catching bangus fry and other small fishes, appears solid and in good condition. The fact is half the tower has collapsed in the sea.

Panglao,Bohol - Rising to four and a half stories, the watchtower in Panglao Island, Bohol, is reputedly the tallest coastal tower in the Philippines. The tapering octagonal structure of cut limestone stands behind the ruins of an old Baroque church, probably built by the Jesuits.
