South Africa 2013 International Year of Water Cooperation with moving part

Issue date 20 March 2013

To raise awareness of the importance of using water wisely, an international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. The main aim of World Water Day is to focus attention on the importance of freshwater and to encourage the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater management.

The drop-shaped stamps issued by South African Post reflects five recognised water uses.

Human consumption

Clean drinking water is a precious resource and is essential for human health.

Purifying tap water is an expensive process; so it is important to close taps properly after use to prevent water loss. Taking shallow baths and short showers also uses less water.

Agriculture

Water is vital for irrigation and the production of food crops. South Africa’s water resources are limited and should be used sparingly.
One way to do this is to irrigate at in the eary morning or in the late afternoon to prevent water loss through evaporation or to install a drip irrigation system.

Industry

The use of wind turbines as a form of electrical generation has considerable environmental benefits when compared to the traditional method of burning fossil fuels, which uses a lot of water. Like all man-made things, wind power turbines have an impact on bat and bird species, but they are water-saving sources of electricity, because they hardly use any water.

Working for Water Programme

The South African Government established the Working for Water Programme to champion the fight against invading alien plants.
Invasive alien trees are being removed because they use tremendous amounts of water. Shown here is a previously unemployed worker removing alien trees from a riverbank.

Biodiversity

The Clanwilliam redfin (Barbus calidus) is one of many small fish species from South Africa that are found nowhere else. It is severely threatened by water abstraction for agriculture, industry, pollution, urban consumption and by alien bass and trout.

The Mauve Bluet damselfly (Proischnura polychromatica) illustrated here, which was thought to be extinct, was rediscovered after invasive alien plants and trees had been removed from the banks of rivers.

USA 2001 Pan American Inverts Miniature Sheet

Issue date 29 March 2001

The US Postal Service issued The Pan-American Inverts souvenir sheet in New York, New York, on March 29, 2001.

The Pan-American Exposition (May 1, 1901-November 2, 1901), held in Buffalo, New York, highlighted advancements of the nineteenth century in industry, transportation, manufacturing, and the arts. On opening day, the US Post Office Department issued a series of six bi-colored stamps commemorating the exposition, using the theme of transportation. A limited number of the stamp sheets were printed with inverted centers: the 1-cent stamp depicting the steamship, "City of Alpena"; the 2-cent stamp depicting the train, "Empire State Express"; and the 4-cent stamp depicting an early electric automobile. The rare inverts quickly became collectibles.

This 2001 souvenir sheet includes reproductions of these famous Pan-American inverts in their original colors as well as four reproductions of a "cinderella" that originally commemorated the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. (A cinderella is an item that resembles, but is not, an official government-issued postage stamp.) The design of the red and blue, diamond-shaped cinderella features a charging buffalo in the center encircled by the words "Pan- American Exposition Buffalo." The addition of an 80-cent denomination makes each of the four cinderella reproductions official postage stamps.

A detail of the cover illustration from a 1901 souvenir guide also appears on the 2001 souvenir sheet. In the illustration, an allegorical female representing unity among the Americas stands on top of a globe. In her left hand she holds a flag - half Canadian, half American - and her right arm rests on the back of a buffalo. The globe shows the western hemisphere and includes the words "Pan-American Exposition 1901. Buffalo, NY, USA." Niagara Falls appears in the background.

South Africa 2014 World Post Day - Stamps which fold into a Parcel box

Issue date 09 October 2014

World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern. The main aim of the UPU is to create and maintain a structure, which ensures the free flow of international mail around the world.

To mark the UPU’s anniversary and to highlight the importance of the work done by postal services worldwide, the day was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Since then, World Post day has been commemorated annually by more than 150 countries worldwide in various ways, including philatelic exhibitions, special stamps and date cancellation marks, conferences, seminars and workshops.

South Africa’s World Post Day stamp issue comprises a self-adhesive stamp sheet with five stamps which features a small box-shaped parcel from a die-cut design, which can be folded into a small box. One side of the stamp sheet shows the stamps illustrated with hands performing various tasks, while the other side looks like a small parcel. When folded, the stamps seem to be hidden inside the box.

Holes seen at the Back of stamp

Issue date 01 March 2015

The special stamp “Play of Light” (value: CHF 1.90) issued by Liechtenstein Post, permits the observer to conduct three experiments relating to the International Year of Light: commemorating 1000 years ago it was proven for the first time that light sources emit light rays, exactly 200 years ago the wave character of light was discovered and the quantum theory of light is 110 years old.

The background of the stamp glows in the dark owing to its fluorescent colour. It turns into a source of light if it was exposed to sunlight beforehand.

The wave theory can be observed if the stamp is held up to a source of light. The micro-perforations in the paper become easily visible as the light waves are diffracted through the small openings.

For the experiment on quantum theory, the light pink colour behind the ball was printed with a special colour. When irradiated with UV light, the colour turns from pink to violet.

India 2015 - My Stamps - Taj Mahal - Agra

Issue date 09 February 2015

My Stamp with the Taj Mahal Stamp was printed at Mumbai General Post Office (G.P.O) with a picture taken of me with my wife at Taj Mahal Agra when I visited India recently.

Tried getting the same done at the Taj Mahal (small post office kiosk within the entrance area to the Taj Mahal) but was not successful. They only sold Post Cards and Stamps which you could post to any where in the world. Posted a card to myself from there (See below).

Tried again at the Agra Main Post Office but they did not have the My Stamp sheet with the Taj Mahal Stamp printed on it.

Finally got it done in Mumbai as I remembered having seen it during my visit for the Mumbaipex 2015 Stamp exhibition earlier. Fortunately the My Stamp sheet with the Taj Mahal Stamp was not sold out and I had it printed with one of my pictures at the Taj Mahal - Agra which itself is one of the most beautiful and breath taking place on earth.

Do get your MyStamp made whenever you visit India.
