South Africa 2014 World Post Day - Stamps which fold into a Parcel box
Issue date 09 October 2014
World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern. The main aim of the UPU is to create and maintain a structure, which ensures the free flow of international mail around the world.
To mark the UPU’s anniversary and to highlight the importance of the work done by postal services worldwide, the day was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Since then, World Post day has been commemorated annually by more than 150 countries worldwide in various ways, including philatelic exhibitions, special stamps and date cancellation marks, conferences, seminars and workshops.
South Africa’s World Post Day stamp issue comprises a self-adhesive stamp sheet with five stamps which features a small box-shaped parcel from a die-cut design, which can be folded into a small box. One side of the stamp sheet shows the stamps illustrated with hands performing various tasks, while the other side looks like a small parcel. When folded, the stamps seem to be hidden inside the box.
