South Africa 2010 Taxi Hand Signs

Issue date 29 January 2010

A set of postage stamps depicting taxi hand signals has been issued by the SA Post Office. The project was the brainchild of Susan Woolf, who is currently doing her PhD in Anthropology at Wits. Woolf's thesis is called 'Taxi hand signs and social spaces'

The stamps, released in a blind-friendly raised-relief set of 10 by the South African Post Office, highlights the unspoken language used to reach a desired destination: an upward index finger goes to Johannesburg’s inner city, a gun style-point is for Alexandra township, and a splayed hand will go to upmarket Rosebank.

South Africa is probably the only country in the world that has special hand signals that indicate to the taxi driver where his prospective client wants to go. Hand Signals depicted on the stamp shows hand signs for travelling to destinations from :

Alexandria to Randburg
Randburg to Tembisa
Tembisa to Sebenza
Turffontein to Mulbarton
Gauteng to Johannesburg CBD
Germiston to Kathlehong
Johannesburg to Sandton
Johannesburg to Phola Park
Emdeni to Highgate
Local to the Area

Limestone has been used in the screen printing on the hand signs on the stamp.
