Grenada 2003 Anatoly Karpov Chess Champion Anaglyph Stamp MS

Issue date 2003

Grenada Post to commemorate the first live 3D internet coverage championship TVD First e-world Chess Championship between two legendary world champions Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov battle it out in 3D. The rapid chess games was played in the ABC Studios in Time Square, New York on December 19 and 20, 2002.

By donning special electronic LCD viewing glasses for $99 you were able to watch the first ever Internet broadcast of a chess match in 3D when transmitted to a computer with specific configuration.

How the 3D broadcast worked: the Computer monitor alternately displays complete left-eye and right-eye images, each time the monitor refreshes. The special 3D glasses have high-speed electronic shutters (made with Liquid Crystal material), which open and close at the same refresh rate as the monitor, in sync with the page flipped images. When the left image is on the screen, the left shutter is open and the right shutter is closed, so that the image is viewed only by your left eye. When the right image is on the screen, the right shutter is open and the left shutter is closed, so that the image is viewed only by your right eye. This happens so quickly that the brain perceives 3D depth as though Karpov and Kasparov were floating in space inside and in front of the screen.

The 3D stamps issued by Grenada Post felicitating the winner of the above championship - Anatoly Karpov with a special 3D Anaglyph Stamp miniature sheet which can be viewed using the Red and Blue Anaglyph glasses.

USA 2003 Early Football Heroes Stamps with hidden image

Issue date 8 August 2003

This set of four honors early American football heroes.

Bronko Nagurski
"Defense him? There's only one way to defense him - shoot him before he leaves the dressing room!" That is what Giants' coach Steve Owen had to say about Bronko Nagurski back in the 1930s. Bronislaw "Bronko" Nagurski (1908-90) was big, fast, and possessed legendary strength. It was not unusual for him to drag two men several yards until a third came to help bring him down.

Ernest Nevers
In 1925, Ernest Nevers (1903-76) was on crutches with broken ankles until two days before the Rose Bowl. He played the entire 60 minutes against Notre Dame on ankles tightly wrapped with pieces of an inner tube. As player-coach of the Chicago Cardinals in 1929, Nevers scored all 40 of the Cardinals' points. Bears' coach George Halas said it best: ÒBears 6, Nevers 40."

Walter Camp
U.S. football began as a soccer-like game in the mid-19th century. Running with the ball and tackling, as in English rugby, was introduced later. The father of American football, Walter Chauncey Camp (1859-1925) developed rules and techniques that set the American game apart from British rugby. He devised guidelines that reformed the game, making it both safer and more exciting.

Red Grange
Harold "Red" Grange (1903-1991) became known as the Galloping Ghost in 1924 when he scored five touchdowns against Michigan, four in the first 12 minutes of play. Damon Runyan wrote that Grange was "three or four men and a horse rolled into one...." Red Grange remains one of football's greatest running backs.

USA 2003 Harry Houdini - Stamps with Hidden Images

Issue date 3 July 2002

The US Postal Service (USPS) issued a special 20 stamp sheet of 37 cents each featuring the image of Harry Houdini - the famous escape artist and magician. This stamp was issued in conjunction with SAM (Society of American Magicians) 2002 Centennial Convention held from July 3-6 at the Hilton New York.

The 2002 issuance of the stamp coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Society of American Magicians. Houdini served as president of the society from 1917 until his death on Halloween, Oct. 31, 1926.

Houdini's birth name was Ehrich Weiss until he changed it in the early 1890s as a tribute to the famous French illusionist, Jean-Eugene Robert-Houdin. Harry Houdini was born in Budapest, Hungary, on March 24, 1874. His family immigrated to the U.S. when he was four and settled first in Appleton, Wisconsin.

When viewed with a special decoder issued by USPS, the image of Harry Houdini appears to be wrapped in chains.
