Spain 2020 Elms of Cabeza del Buey

Issue date 17 September 2020

The seven ancient Elms in the town of Cabeza del Buey, loom large over the chapel of the Our Lady of Belén sanctuary, are believed to be the last examples of the urban elm trees in Extremadura despite the Graphiosis, a serious disease that affects elm trees and that has reduced the population of this tree species in Spain and the rest of the world.

The Elms represented Spain in the 2018 European "Tree Of The Year" competition, finishing in second place with 22,323 votes, the best placing by a Spanish candidate in a competition of this type.

The stamp issued by Correos dedicated to this type of tree and, specifically, to this vintage and historical elm, is printed on wood paper in the form of a cut trunk where its rings can be seen, which not only give information as to the age of the tree, but also details about the kind of life it has led.
