Spain 2020 The 2010 Generation

Issue date 21 September 2020

The Generations series continues with an issue dedicated to the decade running from 2010 to 2019.

A block sheet that brings three new stamps together, dedicated to three of the most significant events of this decade chosen by the Philately Subscribers from many no less significant others.

The first stamp has an image of the King Emeritus, Juan Carlos I and his son King Felipe VI.

This stamp references the historical moment in Spain on 19 July 2014 when Juan Carlos I abdicated in favour of his son who became King Felipe VI of Spain.

The second stamp represents the greatest triumph of the Spanish National Football Team: the World Cup in South Africa. On 11 July 2010, after a tense match against the Netherlands, Spain won the World Cup, which is the reason for this stamp.

In the 26th minute of overtime, Andrés Iniesta scored the winning goal that saw the Spanish Team lift its first World Cup.

The third and final stamp of this block sheet shows Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris engulfed in flames, an image from 15 April 2019. This event has become ingrained in our minds. The whole world watched helplessly as one of France's greatest symbols was lost to the flames.

The block sheet, which has the 1 and 0 embossed, also includes the image of a Spanish flag representing both the succession of the Spanish Crown and the successes of the Spanish football team, which can be seen at the bottom of the sheet together with the coach Vicente del Bosque.

The Eiffel Tower rises above the flames above Notre Dame Cathedral in testament to a moment that France and the rest of the world would like to erase.
